We are Jen & Pharaby, this is our story.
Part 3:
You will never guess what happened! My puppy cried in her crate on our first night at her new home, loud crying and whining too! I let this go on for what felt like hours and she would not stop! So I did what any logical person would do & put her in the bed with me. I was sure she would wet the bed but she actually didn’t! I was shocked! I set a alarm to wake us up at 2am so I could take her out & that worked great for us. We snuggled and slept great, I think we slept much better together since she was able to relax and that meant I was able to sleep. She has slept in my bed ever since. I love having her with me.
The next morning I wanted to take her to get a few things she needed. Apparently I had over looked a few things like a ID tag, brush and a chew toy… and a little pool. So we went to Petco. I had a stroller from when my other pups were seniors and had a hard time getting around. So I let my fresh new puppy ride in the stroller that was filled with so many good memories of my other pups. It was a little bittersweet because I felt like I was giving their things away. Since my new puppy was (hopefully) going to be a service dog she needed to be exposed to all kinds of sights, sounds, places & people. I felt like a safe way to let her see the world was from a stroller. She was not a fan of the stroller at all but we made it work for a few week. She loved going places from the very start so as soon as she was done with her puppy shots we ditched the stroller for good.
We need to back up a little. I had been thinking about her name all night and I was ready to commit. I sent in her papers, and got her ID tag made. Her name is Pharaby Fable and it suites her so well.
This was July 4th and since we live in the Southeastern USA I knew I could expect to hear a lot of fireworks that night. People were having parties, cooking out on grills and BBQs. It was really tempting to be outside where the action was but it was about 95ºf that day so I thought it would be a good time to see if she liked to play in water. I got her a little pink pool that day. I set it up with a little it of water on our patio and she loved it!
Later on when the fireworks started I was worried. I didn’t want my new puppy to be scared but I also knew she had to be brave. Service dogs can’t be scared of fireworks! She did great! We stayed inside but my neighbors were know for getting the biggest fireworks you can find so it was loud! So loud it was shaking the house when they went off. Pharaby slept through a lot of them and I was so proud!
Over our first week home we went to Hobby Lobby, Red Hare Brewery, our local farmers market and an outdoor mall. I was trying to let her see a lot of different things so she would be ready to take on the world! She has loved going places since day one. She has never met a stranger & she loves other animals. In some ways I wish I had not encouraged her to love other dogs as much as she does. Later on in our training that started to get in the way of her paying attention to me. I didn’t know that it would be a issue when back in the summer of 2019 though.
